Microsuction ear wax removal is a manual treatment method used for the safe removal of ear wax or debris in the ear canal. It is a safe, pain free, and waterless ear wax removal method. The clinician uses magnification such as binoculars or a videoscope to visualise inside the ear canal and a low-pressure medical vacuum to gently suction wax and debris out of the ear canal. The entire process takes about 15 to 30 minutes (depending on the condition of the wax) and many patients experience clearer improved hearing immediately.
Before the Procedure
- Softening Drops: Your clinician will often recommend applying olive oil or over-the-counter wax-softening drops for 3 to 5 days prior to your appointment, however, when visiting for the first time in our St Kilda East clinic, there is no need to do this as our clinicians can better assess the natural state of the ear that it is currently in. However, on subsequent visits, you may be advised to do this.
- Medical consultation: You will be asked about your medical history, current symptoms (such as muffled hearing or tinnitus), as well as any ear conditions.
During the Procedure
- Assessing your ears: You will sit upright in a chair while the practitioner wears magnification (such as a binocular microscope) to clearly view your ear canal and assess what is going on in your situation.
- The Suction Process: A speculum is gently inserted into the ear canal. A very thin, sterile tube connected to a suction machine is gently inserted into the ear via the speculum. The suction tube will sound like a loud vacuuming noise, along with crackling or high-pitched sounds as the wax is dislodged and removed. It is important to keep nice and still during this process.
- Sensations: While the procedure is generally painless, you may feel a gentle tugging sensation or mild pressure from the movement of the wax. Some people experience mild dizziness or nausea if the suction stimulates the balance system in the inner ear. If it becomes too uncomfortable, you can ask your clinician to for a break at any time.
After the Procedure
- Immediate Relief: Once the blockage is removed, your ear may instantly feel lighter and sound much clearer. As the brain has been compensating for muffled hearing, everyday sounds might momentarily seem loud or sharp.
- Follow-up Check: The clinician will do a final check to ensure the ear canal is completely clear and to assess the ear drum and the state of the canal.
- Post treatment advice: Your clinician will discuss how your ear is looking and give any advice as to how to look after your ears, depending on what condition your ears are in. It is usually advised to avoid inserting cotton buds inside the ear canals. You may also be instructed to keep water out of the ear for a day or longer.
