Microsuction Ear Wax Removal

Microsuction Ear Wax Removal

What is Microsuction ear wax removal?

Microsuction ear wax removal is a manual method for removing wax build-up from the ear canal. In our clinic it is performed by either our trained nurse practitioner or audiologist. Microsuction ear wax removal is less traumatic compared to other methods such as ear syringing. There are few contraindications for this method, and it has a lower risk of infection. At our clinic, a speculum is carefully placed into the ear canal and a mounted converged binocular system is used to visualise inside the ear canal.

Common causes of ear wax build-up

Ear wax build-up is quite common and can be caused by several factors including:

  • narrow canals
  • hairy canals
  • an overproduction of cerumen
  • craniofacial anomalies
  • old age
  • cotton bud use
  • hearing aids
  • regular ear plug use
  • foreign bodies

The following symptoms may be an indicator for ear wax build-up or compaction:

  • Hearing loss
  • A blocked sensation in the ear
  • Ear pain
  • Worsening of ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
